The Gallery: Light Play

Posted by on Aug 4, 2010 in Kai, Parenting, Photography | 27 comments

When Kai and his best friend Lucy were a little younger and we were forced to do indoor stuff every day over winter, they loved making the fibre-optic lights dance in the local Sensory Room.

They’re still some of the best photos I’ve ever taken of them both, they just BREATHE the energy that comes from them both, little monkeys that they are.

The colours are like them: vibrant, glowing, alive, changing. Deep reds and golds of joy and passion, with moody blue and purple and the fresh green of growth and potential.

It’s an amazing dance to watch and I feel very privileged to get a front-row seat… even if it does make me a little dizzy and dazzled some days, it’s still one hell of a show.

(Apologies if you’ve seen the last photo before, I used it to illustrate a post a while back, but it was too perfect not to use again!)

This post was written for Week 22 of Tara’s Gallery

The theme this week was Playtime

What great photos! I really do need to start "using" my camera more than just "point and shoot". Looks like you all had fun!

Wonderful photos. How great to have a sensory room to explore. I'd love you to come and link with the Play Academy too – this is a fab play idea.

Awesome photos! My daughter had a fab time playing around with my iphone camera and a couple of lights in the dark one night at home. They were pretty cool lights – that changed colours and she found by moving the light around and keeping the camera steady she could capture some amazing shots – http://www.chezlee.co.nz/2010/07/cool-photos-from…

    Fab photos again Josie :)
Have you done them on slow exposure – that's not possible with a mobile phone or point-and-shoot, is it? I'm wondering whether to invest in a "proper" camera you see.

Ooh this brings back memories, we used to go to the sensory room when the bear was tiny, he loved it, and it was fascinating watching him follow the lights around.

I remember this day well (and many others just like it too!!). These photos are just brilliant; they are the only medium which really seem to capture the curious Lucy & Kai relationship; words can't really do it, or traditional photos. I still don't quite know how they seem to communicate and understand each other so well, especially since Kai has his own very specific form of language, and given that Lucy is so incredibly difficult and sensitive about any sort of physical interaction. And also the small matter that they are both generally SO highly strung and fussy about everything….

Actually, how the heck did we produce such children when we are so normal and well adjusted ourselves….? :D ;) XXXX

Chipmunk would just love to visit a sensory room, he'd get so much out of it! Unfortunately, I'm not sure we have one locally :(
