Writing Workshop #18 – Signs of Spring and Secret Dreams

Posted by on Mar 22, 2010 in Writing, Writing Prompts | 10 comments

Welcome to Monday’s Writing Workshop prompts! We had a record number of contributions last week – nearly 60!

Thanks so much to everyone who submitted a post. My apologies if I didn’t get round to reading all of them. It’s starting to become quite an undertaking each week!

Before I give you this week’s prompts it’s time to announce the winner of the Handmade Writer creative writing course starting April 12th run by Bring Yourself. I’ve used random.org to select the winner, allocating all your posts with the number that they appear in the McLinky plus an extra post that .

The first number drawn was 20, the writer of which opted out of the competition because of time demands. So I re-drew and the winner is…

A Modern Dilemma for her entry number 40 – Airport Meltdown

Congratulations MD!

If you could contact me with your email address I can put you in touch with Amy of Bring Yourself to arrange your place on the course!

So, without further ado, here’s this week’s prompts for you.

For any newbies (and it’s never to late to join in), here’s how it works… I’m going to give you 5 writing/blogging prompts. Pick one, pick two, or do them all if you’re really keen – it’s up to you. How you respond is your choice. You could share a real-life story, or make one up. You could write a poem or just free-write without thinking too hard and see what happens. It can be funny; it can be serious; it can be emotional. It can be whatever you want it to be. The only rule is to have fun with it!

Prompts each week will take their inspiration from blogs, current affairs, daily life, or just whatever everyone happened to be talking about that week. If you’d like to suggest a prompt then send me an email or catch me on Twitter – I would love to hear your ideas.

So here they are:

1. Spring is definitely making its presence known at last. How is it making you feel? Do you feel anything new ‘sprouting’ alongside all the new shoots and buds? What signs to you look for, both inside of yourself and outdoors, to tell you spring is here?
- Inspired by Mummy Limited’s lovely hope-filled post: ‘Is it here? It is, you know, it’s definitely here….’ and the Spring Equinox at the weekend!.

2. Tell me about somewhere you used to work. A location: a town, a country, a tiny cubicle, a massive warehouse, even. Describe your memories of that place and your time there.
- Inspired by the Moiderer’s ‘Diary of a travelling executive‘ describing her time in Dublin

3. What do you secretly dream of your children doing? We all know they are not us and more than anything we would want to see them happy, but sometimes a wish to live vicariously through them is unavoidable. Confess your secret dreams for them.
- Inspired by Tasha at WAHM-BAHM who is wondering ‘How to avoid the temptation to clone’

4. Describe a ‘letting go’ that made you happy, rather than sad. What have you been ready to say goodbye to? What new future have you been ready to embrace?
- Inspired by Sam’s beautiful ‘Bye Bye Baby’ on her fab new blog ‘Keep Calm & Eat Cake’ (now that’s my kind of blog name!)

5. Have you ever made a decision based purely on instinct? How did it work out?
- Inspired by my decision to follow my gut and say no to the health visitor last week.

Now here’s what you have to do. Write your post and publish it on your blog between now and THURSDAY. On Thursday come back and use the widget that will be up to paste in the URL of your post to share. Then take some time to read some of the other entries and leave some comment love! We’re not here to critique – just to have fun and support each other in our writing experiments. So be kind please.

Anyone who would like to submit something via email, or even anonymously will be more than welcome to do so. I’ll post them on the site here and include the link in Thursday’s round-up.

Feel free to use the Workshop badge on your blog or as part of your post if you like. Code is here:

Note: I’m told Blogger does something a bit funny with the code so you’ll need to copy and paste it and then retype the quotation marks (“) as Blogger changes them for some reason.

See you Thursday then!

This Writing Workshop is brought to you in association with Mama Kat’s Losin’ It – who’s lovely author came up with the concept and runs her own workshop over in the U.S.

My dreams have come true, I have inspired a writing prompt. Thank you!

Prompts 1 and 2 are getting my creative juices flowing already, but I need to be in Business Woman mode for a bit, so can't do it right away. Hopefully I will find the time again this week, as I really enjoyed it last week. In fact, I have visions of me only managing one post a week over the next few months and it always being based on your prompts.
