Writing Prompts #2 – Inspired by the Every-Day

Posted by on Oct 19, 2009 in Writing, Writing Prompts | 11 comments

Writing Workshop Badge

It’s Monday morning, which means it’s time for Sleep is for the Weak’s Writing Workshop prompts! I was so delighted with response last week – I hope lots more of you will join in now we’re getting into the swing of things. Don’t be shy!

So here’s how it works… I’m going to give you 5 writing/blogging prompts. Pick one, pick two, or do them all if you’re really keen – it’s up to you. How you respond is your choice. You could share a real-life story, or make one up. You could write a poem or just free write without thinking too hard and see what happens. It can be funny; it can be serious; it can be emotional. It can be whatever you want it to be. There are no rules (apart from you must not talk about Writing Workshop, or actually, you MUST talk about Writing Workshop. AT ALL TIMES. To EVERYONE… because it rocks).

Prompts each week will take their inspiration from blogs, current affairs, daily life, or just whatever everyone happened to be talking about that week. If you’d like to suggest a prompt then send me an email or catch me on Twitter – I would love to hear your ideas.

So here they are:

1. You get a day off. No kids, no housework, no responsibility. Where would you go? What would you do?
- Inspired by Metropolitan Mum’s Mummy Needs a Break

2. Write your house rules… your DREAM house rules, that is.
- Inspired by Potty Mummy’s own House Rules this week, my favourite being:

The management would, just for once, like the opportunity to finish what she starts in the smallest room without interruption.

… hear hear!

3. Take a well-loved bedtime story that you’ve read so many times you know virtually off by heart. Then re-write yourself and/or an episode of your day into the story.
- Inspired by April’s Tribute to “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”

4. Tell us about a close-call, a miracle, or a lucky escape .
- Inspired by the terrifying story of the baby falling under the train this week.

5. Sit in a room of your house you spend a lot of time in. And really LOOK. Notice all the details you usually miss, and describe them with all the creativity you can muster. Let the every-day inspire you.
- Inspired by ME! Who did this writing exercise today and was pretty flabbergasted at how such seemingly mundane things can provide great writing fodder.

Now here’s what you have to do. Write your post and publish it on your blog between now and Wednesday. On Wednesday come back and use the widget that will be up to paste in the URL of your post to share. Then take some time to read some of the other entries and leave some comment love! We’re not here to critique – just to have fun and support each other in our writing experiments. So be kind please.

Anyone who would like to submit something via email, or even anonymously will be more than welcome to do so. I’ll post them on the site here and include the link in Wednesday’s round-up.

Feel free to use the Workshop badge on your blog or as part of your post if you like. Code is here:

Note: I’m told Blogger does something a bit funny with the code so you’ll need to copy and paste it and then retype the quotation marks (“) as Blogger changes them for some reason.

See you Wednesday then! And have fun!

P.S. And if you fancy plugging this workshop on the social network of your choice? Then that would be fan-frickin-tastic.

This Writing Workshop is brought to you in association with Mama Kat’s Losin’ It – who’s lovely author came up with the concept and runs her own workshop over in the U.S.

Thanks for doing this Josie. I’m thoroughly enjoying this.
By the way, whenever I leave a comment I tick the box ‘notify me of follow-up comments via e-mail’, but it’s not working. I’m pretty sure I’ve given you the correct email address! Is it me?

@SandyCalico, See if you get this one – have checked my settings and can’t see anything obvious. Will ask around see if anyone else is having problems – have you checked your junk folder?
